Container Gardens this Spring

Have you found yourself wishing you had direct access to fresh herbs and vegetables? Now that the weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, it might be the perfect time to start thinking of a container garden in your apartment.

You don’t need a balcony or a whole backyard to enjoy freshly grown produce so now is your time to take advantage of the warm weather in the forecast and start your garden! Here are a few tips on how to successfully start an indoor garden this spring:

Choose the right vegetables and herbs.

The first step in your kitchen garden is to pick items that will not only thrive in containers but that you will also enjoy! Just because you can grow it indoors doesn’t mean that you need to grow it. There are many varieties of plants that you can grow and enjoy and you might want to start with a few options and then expand each year.

Herbs : Most herbs do pretty good in containers and will be able to survive on your window sill but a good list to go off of:

Basil

Chives

Mint

Greek Oregano

Rosemary

Thyme

Vegetables : Veggies can require a little more research when choosing a good fit for your containers. Make sure you choose options that will fit in your space (some root veggies need large containers, some veggies need to vine and can be too large for indoors) and if you pair them with any other veggies or herbs make sure they will benefit each other’s growth.

Choose the right container.

With online shopping and megastores, it’s easy to be overwhelmed with the options you have for your containers. Realistically, you will be able to grow a lot of your plants in ANY container (we are talking about a milk jug would be great) but if you were looking for a pretty planter that will add to the aesthetic of your apartment check out a vertical window garden! These options allow you to have the best use of space as well as most sunlight available.

If you have multiple windows and want to use floor pots, you can get a stacking garden pot to give you options to continue to add to your garden or start as small as you would like.

The most important thing to remember when purchasing your containers is the drainage of the plants and the size of the roots. Make sure you get a planter that the roots can grow deep if needed.

DCU Center:

The DCU Center can host just about any event you can think of. From sports to conferences to monster trucks and everything in between you will find it all at the DCU Center. This is just a quick .5 mile walk from the Grid and you will have plenty of options for food and drinks along your walk! The DCU Center is home to the Worcester Railers Ice Hockey team and the Massachusetts Pirates indoor football. The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts

The Hanover Theatre located just .2 miles from the Grid district brings Broadway to Worcester. There are great unique shows at the Hanover and big name acts that we are so lucky to have right down the street from us! The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts has put on the amazing Julius Caesar on the Worcester Common last year and we are looking forward to exciting events they plan this year! We are in the start of the Broadway Season and we encourage you to check out some of the great shows playing at the Hanover!

Polar Park

The newest addition to the Worcester sports scene, The WooSox, are back on April 12! Their home is right down the street at the Polar Park stadium. Spring is right around the corner and that means graduations are coming up! If you are in the graduating class, you might be looking to get started on your own for the first time. This is a big step and finding your first apartment seems overwhelming but at the Grid, we have many first-time renters and understand the help that you might need. As you begin to look for a new apartment and start narrowing down what you need from the apartments and building management, here are some tips and tricks from our Leasing agents to make sure your first move-in is easy and stress-free!

Create a budget

Your first apartment is going to create a new financial journey. You’ll have rent, utilities, renters insurance, and groceries to budget in now. This can seem overwhelming at first but once you create a monthly budget you’ll be able to confidently pick what you can afford and what you need to work on spending less at. You should be creating a budget before starting to look at apartments so you can narrow down your choices and get an apartment you love quickly!

Make a checklist for essentials

Do you already have some essentials from your current living situation? Maybe you live in a dorm and have a good amount of items that you have accumulated already. Or maybe your parents are ready to let go of some of their small appliances and are willing to give them to you. You won’t want to be spending your first day moving in running to the store every few hours to stock up. A great idea to keep costs down and to make sure you don’t forget anything is to make a “move-in essentials checklist”. Here is a starter list (large items such as bed, couches, etc. are not included but don’t forget those!)

· Shower curtain, hook, and liner

· Towels

· Silverware

· Plates

· Bowls

· Coffee cups

· Storage containers

· Broom

Get organized BEFORE you move in

The day you move into your newest apartment you will have a lot on your mind, making sure you have the big items checked off before you move in will help you feel settled in right away. Your utilities can be switched into your name before you move in. Call the electricity provider, internet provider and if your new apartment doesn’t include heat you will want to call them as well. You can also contact the post office and get your address changed to make sure you do not miss out on any important items in the mail. These might seem like simple tasks but getting them under control before you move can really take the pressure off your to-do list the day you move.

Learn your new neighborhood

If you aren’t familiar with the neighborhood you are moving to, make sure you explore the neighborhood and get your bearings. It is important to know where you will do your grocery shopping, where your closest coffee shop is, and any fun events you will have within walking distance. The great thing about living at the Grid means that you will have access to all the great events hosted in Downtown Worcester and you are only a short walk from the new Polar Park and the Canal District. The weather is getting warmer and it is time to explore the city. We are extremely dog friendly here at the Grid in Worcester and even have a dog park on Portland St to give pup parents a quick place to visit without travelling outside of downtown. However, we think it is important to go on adventures your pet around the city and here are some dog friendly options for you!

Worcester is growing and knows how important dogs are to the people who live in the city. In 2017 they added two beautiful dog parks. Along with the Downtown Dog Park located right down the street from the Grid apartments!

Keep your dog entertained this winter!

With the weather getting colder and less daylight, how do you keep your little four legged friends entertained? We compiled a list of fun indoor activities that you can do in your apartment to keep your pup busy and happy!

1. Create an indoor obstacle course! Use boxes (we all know you have left over boxes from your Amazon orders..), chairs, pots and pans, or really anything that you have around your apartment to create a maze! Lure your dog to follow a pattern using treats and lots and lots of praise!

2. Shell & Cup game. This can be as difficult or as easy as your dog needs, simply hide a treat under a cup and lay a few decoy cups around without a treat. Let your pup sniff out the cups that have a treat under it. If your dog can’t quite get the hang of finding the right cup, keep it fun for them by adding more and more cups with treats so they get the reward often!

3. Freeze a Kong. The Kong treat can be filled with peanut butter, cheese, yogurt, broth or canned dog food. To add a challenge and give your pup more play time try freezing the Kong. Add larger treats in to increase the reward and give fido a harder challenge to get the treat out!

If you do spend time walking your pup outside make sure you care for their feet after! The salt and snow melting chemicals can be tough on dogs feet. We hope you stay cozy with your dogs in this weather and remember Spring is only 100 days away!

12/3 – Festival of lights on the common: From 430-9 there will be performances, food trucks, ice-skating and more! Stop at the Brew on the Grid for a hot coffee before heading to the common, they’ll be open until 7pm for the tree lighting!

12/13 – Grid Resident Food Drive! Stop into 50 Franklin from 5-7 and drop off canned goods or non perishable foods for the Worcester County Food Bank

All December long catch a show or two at the Hanover Theatre! With holiday specials like Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer: The Musical, A Christmas Carol, The Boston Pops, and many more shows in the line up! You can even go to Mechanics Hall December 12 ^th to enjoy the Nutcracker.

Along with all these amazing events there is plenty of holiday spectacles in the surrounding area, from the Tower Hill Botanical Gardens to the Southwick Zoo you can enjoy outdoor light displays and a sip on hot chocolate while taking in the sights.
